In the summer of 1991, a small group of UCD students and graduates created Hygieia Biological Laboratories in a three-room warehouse on the outskirts of Woodland.  Their goal was to challenge the status quo by engaging in meaningful scientific research and development without the politics and bureaucratic restraints inherent in large corporate and public institutions.

From this beginning, Hygieia has become fully engaged in the research, development, and manufacturing of vaccines, working toward solutions to both human and animal diseases.  Hygieia is remarkable for its continued growth since its founding, with routine introduction of novel products and scientific innovations.

In its early years, the lab focused primarily on the development of vaccines for livestock and poultry, particularly anti-mastitis vaccines for dairy cattle.  Today Hygieia leads the industry with a wide variety of commercially available products and tailor-made vaccines.  In 2003, Hygieia introduced the first of a novel line of companion animal vaccines with the Crotalus Atrox Toxoid, a rattlesnake envenomation vaccine that decreases the severity of rattlesnake bite in canines.  Hygieia scientists are continually exploring novel approaches towards the development of prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines.

Hygieia Biological Laboratories has product manufacturing, quality control, research and development, and shipping departments all located in Woodland.  We are always looking to grow our company with curious, self-motivating individuals who have a strong work ethic and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.  Those with a background in microbiology, animal science, biotechnology, or general biological sciences most commonly fit our needs; however, sales and office support positions do come open from time to time.  Strong candidates will have previous hands-on laboratory experience through work history or internships and have the ability to think critically.
