Pharmacy Residency Program

The Henry Ford Hospital Department of Pharmacy Services has been training pharmacy residents since 1980 and is regarded as a premier institution for training pharmacists. The PGY1 residency program at Henry Ford Hospital is the largest in the state of Michigan. The pharmacy residency training program prepares clinical pharmacists who are well trained for general or specialized clinical pharmacy practice and who will optimize the outcomes of our patients, support our health-system’s recruitment needs and advance the profession of pharmacy.

The following programs are available at Henry Ford Hospital:

  • Post-graduate year one (PGY1) residency in pharmacy practice (ASHP accredited)
  • Post-graduate year one/two (PGY1/2) residency in pharmacotherapy (ASHP accredited)
  • Post-graduate year two (PGY2) residency in critical care (ASHP accredited)
  • Post-graduate year two (PGY2) residency in infectious diseases (ASHP accredited)
  • Post-graduate year two (PGY2) residency in oncology (ASHP accredited)
  • Post-graduate year two (PGY2) residency in solid organ transplant (ASHP accredited)
  • Post-graduate year two (PGY2) residency in ambulatory care (ASHP candidate)
  • Infectious diseases pharmacy fellowship in antimicrobial stewardship

Henry Ford Hospital Pharmacy Residents, Fellows and Preceptors are recognized nationally and locally for excellence:

  • Susan L. Davis, PharmD was selected as a panel member for the National Institutes of Health COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines in 2020.
  • Ed Szandzik, RPh, MBA was awarded the Michigan Pharmacists Association Pharmacist of the Year Award for 2020.
  • Jane McDonnell, PharmD, BCPS, was awarded Wayne State University’s 2020 Preceptor of the Year.
  • Allison Bouwma, PharmD (PGY2-Critical Care) was selected for the Society of Critical Care Medicine Congress Star Research Top Ten in 2020.
  • James Kalus, PharmD received the 2019 Pharmacist of the Year Award from the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
  • Rox Gatia, PharmD received the 2019 Pharmacist of the Year Award from the Southeastern Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
  • Misa Stuart (PGY1 resident) was selected as Society of Critical Care Medicine Congress Star Research Presenter in 2019. This designation is awarded to the top 64 abstracts at the Critical Care Congress.
  • Monica Bianchini, PharmD (PGY1 resident) and Susan Davis, PharmD (infectious diseases preceptor) were awarded the ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Resident Practice Based Research Award for 2017-2018. 
  • Amber Lanae Martirosov, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP was recognized with the 2017 Michigan Pharmacists Association Distinguished New Pharmacist Practitioner Award. 
  • Emily Blum, PharmD (PGY2-Pharmacotherapy) and Amber Lanae Martirosov, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP were awarded the ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Resident Practice Based Research Grant for 2016-2017. This award supports quality research to advance pharmacy practice. 
  • Jona Lekura, PharmD, BCPS received the 2016 Pharmacist of the Year award from the Southeastern Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
  • Emily Blum, PharmD (PGY-2 Pharmacotherapy) and Amber Lanae Martirosov, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP received the Innovative Practice award from the Southeastern Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
  • John DiLodovico, PharmD was named the 2015 Henry Ford Hospital Diversity Hero. This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to respecting and honoring diversity, inclusion and service excellence.
  • Amber Lanae Martirosov, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP and the Henry Ford Hospital Pulmonary Clinic were recognized as finalists for the Henry Ford Health System Outstanding Progress Award. This award recognizes health-care teams that improve care according to the Institute of Medicine’s six domains of quality: care that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient-centered.
  • Nancy MacDonald, PharmD, BCPS received the 2015 Henry Ford Hospital Shadow of a Leader Award. This award recognizes leaders who achieve key results through their high quality of work, demonstrate system values, foster employee morale, promote and maintain safety, implement process improvement strategies and exemplify customer service excellence.
  • Diana Kostoff, PharmD, BCPS, BCOP (hematology/oncology preceptor) was recognized with the 2014 Michigan Society of Health System Pharmacists Professional Practice Award.
  • The Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Fellowship was awarded the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists/Cubist Pharmaceuticals Antimicrobial Stewardship Fellowship Award for 2014-2015. This award supports advanced training opportunities for pharmacists committed to research in antimicrobial stewardship and infectious diseases.
    The PGY1 Residency in Pharmacy Practice was awarded the ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Residency Expansion Grant for 2013-2014.
  • The PGY2 Residency in Infectious Diseases was awarded the ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Residency Expansion Grant for 2012-2013.
  • Lisa Dumkow, PharmD (PGY1 resident) and Susan Davis, PharmD (infectious diseases preceptor) were awarded the ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Resident Practice Based Research Award for 2011-2012. This award supports practice based research related to the ASHP Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative.
