Curriculum and Didactics:

The General Surgery program provides a robust didactic schedule. It is designed to utilize the extensive resources of Henry Ford Health System Simulation Center and our affiliated training institutions." Under Monthly heading, remove bullet "Full-day Statewide Campus System lecture series, last Wednesday of the month. To accomplish the program goal of preparing them for competency in General Surgery, residents will devote time to technical training in general surgery, related specialties, academic endeavors and research.

HFWH General Surgery Residency Program will use the SCORE curriculum, which includes the on-line use of surgical textbooks, videos, anatomy, and board review activities. The HFWH General Surgery Program Director will be able to track, assess and develop reports on the residents' progress in working through the developed curriculum rotations. Residents and Program Directors are able to use the program from any computer with internet access.

We have a variety of regularly scheduled education conferences that include journal club, board review using SCORE system, Morbidity and Mortality, and Grand Round lectures by guest lecturers and medical student lecture presentations/ suture clinics or skills labs.

The Program requires that each resident obtain competence in the seven ACGME competencies to the level expected of a new practitioner. Surgical skills will be assessed through skills labs including FLS, FES, and Ultrasound guided paracentesis, and vascular access. Residents are expected to have FLS certification by the end of the 3rd year of residency.

Reading List

A list of books representing minimal core knowledge of surgery has been established. Students applying for a residency in General Surgery are expected to have completed a standard surgical text prior to starting his/her residency. This would appear to be the minimum knowledge, which would allow him/her to be of assistance to the surgical patient and attending staff. Additional reading from the "list" is encouraged throughout the program. Obligatory reading is regularly assigned to the Resident. Use of the interactive learning center is also encouraged. Journal articles are recommended and referred throughout the program.
