About
At MSOE’s School of Nursing, students learn how to combine compassion, critical thinking, technology and science. Students can apply the knowledge they gain in the classroom and laboratory to a variety of complex clinical experiences.
The traditional full-time curriculum track is designed specifically for students who are earning their first college degree. Generally, these are students who have graduated from high school and are beginning their college education or students who have earned college credits at another university and are transferring those credits to MSOE. Students are accepted directly into the nursing major. Progression through the sequence of clinical courses is guaranteed to all students who maintain full-time status and continue to meet the academic progression criteria.
The Accelerated Second-Degree track is designed for individuals who already have a non-nursing BA or BS degree but want to change careers. The BSN-ASD is a compressed, year-round curriculum designed to enable students to enter the workforce as professional nurses in approximately 18 months, assuming the student has met all of the prerequisites.
The Leadership and Management track of the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program from MSOE, with its unique blend of nursing and business concepts, will equip graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to function effectively in the health care environment. MSOE’s MSN program is based on the fact that nurses at mid-management, executive levels and nurse entrepreneurs must have the capacity to manage financial resources, manage human capital, analyze large data sets, understand complex organizational systems, and ensure quality and safety, all through the lens of nursing practice. The curriculum in the MSN program meets this need by blending the expertise of the faculty of the School of Nursing and the Rader School of Business with the student’s knowledge and experience.
The Mental Health Nurse Practitioner track of the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), developed in collaboration with Rogers Behavioral Health, is for students interested in wholistic care for patients with mental or behavioral health challenges. This program integrates best practices for client care, ranging from prescribing to psychotherapy treatment plans.
MSOE’s School of Nursing’s gerontology certificate prepares practicing RNs to provide exceptional care to older adults in any health care setting. The courses focus on healthy aging; managing acute and chronic diseases in older adults; policy, service, and social issues; and end-of-life care.
The MSOE post-master’s PMHNP certificate program is designed to develop competencies in a broad range of topics. The student learns to deliver high-quality, safe and holistic care to clients with mental and behavioral health disorders. The student acquires knowledge to lead others and to manage resources in complex health care systems with a sense of social and ethical responsibility and use best evidence to improve health care systems to positively impact outcomes for patients, families, and communities.
Following graduation, MSOE nursing graduates are highly sought after by health care organizations. The variety of clinical opportunities, the number of clinical hours (≈ 750 hours) and lab hours (≈ 200 hours), plus participation in at least 20 simulations prepares students to transition to the role of the professional nurse.
