About

Georgetown seeks to graduate physicians with a generalist professional education.  This process integrates the scientific, clinical, professional, and "high touch" competencies needed to deliver patient-centered care.  Our education is guided by knowledge, skills, and values reflective of the Georgetown community.

The School of Medicine is heir to the Jesuit traditions of care of the sick and commitment to service and social justice. It embodies the university’s dedication to the pursuit of knowledge in service of the community.

The Georgetown medical experience is centered in cura personalis — care for a person’s psychological, spiritual, social well-being in addition to their physical well-being. It lays the groundwork for the intellectual and ethical formation of physician-healers committed to the clinically competent care and well-being of their patients and dedicated to the health needs of the underserved in our society.

The Georgetown Experimental Medical Studies Program (GEMS) provides an opportunity for disadvantaged students to prepare for a career in medicine.  Applicants to the program must fulfill the same application requirements as those applying to medical school, and must submit an application to the GEMS Committee.  Students selected to participate in the GEMS program are required to participate in structured learning activities while completing certain first year medical courses. GEMS students are encouraged to apply to the School of Medicine for entrance at the completion of the GEMS year.

Special Masters Program in Physiology (SMP Program)

The Special Master's in Physiology Program (SMP), is a 1-year Master of Science degree program, housed in the Department of Pharmacology & Physiology.  This program is designed for students who wish to strengthen their academic record in order to present a more competitive application for medical school.  Applicants submit an application to the program, but personal interviews are not required.  If accepted to the program, the student will take nine courses that comprise much of the first year medical sciences (taken with current medical students), in addition to graduate courses.
