Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is the nation’s largest medical school and the only Academic Health Center among the colleges of osteopathic medicine.  With Millcreek Community Hospital and the Clinical Practices of Medical Associates of Erie, the College is the core of LECOM Health, an innovative medical education and health care system. This partnership strives to add to the quality of life for our neighbors by bringing total health care to the community. The Health Center has a 218-bed teaching hospital training new physicians and pharmacist in 14 residency and fellowship programs in the region’s largest post-graduate medical training institution.

The College opened one of the top fitness and wellness facilities in the country, built a network of physician offices and operates a senior living center that is introducing a new generation in skilled nursing care for older adults. LECOM Health provides clinical training opportunities for medical and pharmacy students throughout these facilities.

LECOM offers innovative and affordable education in osteopathic medicine, pharmacy and dental medicine. From campuses in Erie and Greensburg, PA., Elmira, NY, and Bradenton, FL., LECOM provides student-centered pathways to prepare the next generation of health care professionals.

LECOM School of Pharmacy

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine recognized the growing national need for pharmacists and opened the School of Pharmacy in 2002. LECOM believes that new trends in the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum had complementary goals to the total-person, patient-centered care fostered by osteopathic medicine.

The LECOM School of Pharmacy has structured its classroom and experiential curriculum to prepare future pharmacists to provide patient care that ensures optimal therapeutic outcomes. The mission statement reflects the expectations for future pharmacy professionals.

The desired outcome of the LECOM School of Pharmacy is to prepare pharmacy professionals committed to provide high-quality, ethical, and empathetic patient-centered care to serve the needs of a diverse population. Through the integration of the sciences with critical thinking skills and effective communication, we will prepare future pharmacists to be strong patient advocates and leaders in their communities, in professional associations, and in research activities.

The vision of the LECOM School of Pharmacy is to be a nationally recognized leader in the evolution of pharmacy practice through excellence in education, commitment to community health and wellness, and innovative research.

LECOM School of Pharmacy is committed to a culture that equally values a nurturing and supportive environment, collaborative practices, community service, dedication to the profession of pharmacy, diversity, excellence in scholarship and teaching, honesty, integrity, leadership, life-long learning, professionalism, quality assurance and continuous quality improvement, and a student-centered environment.

Doctor of Pharmacy

The LECOM Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Degree program provides a solid background in patient-centered care and prepares its Pharm.D. graduates to become effective members of the health care team for all areas of practice.

How does it work?

The Doctor of Pharmacy program at the LECOM School of Pharmacy offers pathway choices:

The three curricula offer the same spectrum of didactic courses, credit hours, and experiential education and experiences. The full array of supporting services exists at both campuses. Physical facilities, at each campus, are state-of-the art and of sufficient volume to meet all educational and administrative functions.

The Doctor of Pharmacy program integrates science and hands-on practical experience. The professional program is structured around an outcomes-based curriculum where the integration of basic sciences, pharmacy practice and professional experiences is emphasized. Students are exposed to an early involvement with pharmacy practice experiences that provides valuable learning experiences for their future careers as pharmacists. This also allows a progressive development of students’ professional communication skills, as well as a true appreciation of pharmaceutical care concepts. Strong emphasis is placed on professionalism and life-long learning.

Osteopathic Relationship
LECOM opened the School of Pharmacy to further the college’s mission to prepare the next generation of health care professionals through the whole-person philosophy of osteopathic medicine.

Community Involvement
Since 2006, LECOM students have been recognized each year by the Corporation for National and Community Service through the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The college encourages student involvement and leadership in community service activities. LECOM students continue to demonstrate that “The Community is Our Campus”. The students are actively involved in various community service events, some of which include poison prevention education, health fairs, Relay for Life, and charity walks.

Facilities
The College designed its facilities so that each and every detail lends itself to the mission of teaching students how to care for patients. All LECOM facilities offer the latest instructional technology. Lecture halls have ‘smart classroom’ equipment with wireless and wired computer network connections for student laptops. Classrooms offer multi-media presentations, video conferencing between campuses and in the larger lecture halls, instructors control and illustrate presentations from a smart tablet at the lectern. An online learning management system is available to augment student learning. The LECOM School of Pharmacy curriculum includes laboratory demonstrations and hands-on exercises, which prepare our students to compound extemporaneous and intravenous preparations. Students also participate in small group sessions to develop application, communication, and other skills needed for the pharmacy profession.

Through innovative, effective coursework and experience, your training to be pharmacist will be complete in order to fill your career in any one of a number of different ways, including:
