Company History
For more than 60 years, Hargray has been connecting customers to each other and the world, growing from a local phone company to an industry leader providing a full suite of entertainment and communications services, as well as directory advertising solutions to tens of thousands of residences and businesses over a service area encompassing over 400 square miles.
Hargray was originally established in Hardeeville, SC, as a family owned and operated business called Harcan Telephone. By 1949, the company was providing Bluffton with landline telephone service, stretching to Hilton Head Island by 1958.
In 1980, Hargray began offering cable television service, and by 2000, wireless phone and high speed Internet services had also been added to the product range.
In addition to the areas above, Hargray also serves Ridgeland, Beaufort and Estill in South Carolina, and Chatham County in Georgia.
In 2007, Hargray was acquired by Quadrangle Capital Partners, a premier private equity firm that makes long-term investments in companies with compelling growth opportunities. Since then, Hargray has invested over $180 million to increase network bandwidth and reliability, and to establish a 24/7 network operations control center to monitor and perform after-hours upgrades.
Since 2011, Hargray has made over $110 million in capital investments, including the installation of nearly 175 miles of fiber to provide advanced business services in the Savannah area.
Hargray’s service area continued to expand in 2012, with the acquisition of Charter Communications’ Beaufort cable system. In addition, Hargray added a full suite of data center services with the acquisition of iTech, a Savannah-based managed-services company.
As the nation’s leading wireless carriers migrate to 4G infrastructure, Hargray has become an industry leader in providing a pure fiber-based wide area network (WAN) to cellular towers throughout the region. As of June 2014, Hargray had secured contracts from major wireless companies to supply fiber connectivity to 163 carrier sites across Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton counties in South Carolina, and Bryan, Liberty, Bulloch and Chatham counties in Georgia.
Hargray also invests heavily in the community. With more than 350 employees living in the area, Hargray embraces their important role in the community. From providing products and services that promote businesses and enable commerce, to supporting over 75 local events and charities annually, Hargray is committed to enhancing the lives of everyone in the Lowcountry. In addition, Hargray Caring Coins Foundation, a program generously funded by Hargray customers “rounding up” their bills, has donated over $2 million to local nonprofits since its founding in 2003.
