About

Fred Meyer Pharmacy Residency

Fred Meyer Pharmacy has been involved with Community Pharmacy Practice Residency training since 2006. The program was the first community residency program accredited by ASHP and APhA in the State of Oregon.

Purpose Statement

To build upon the Pharm.D. education and outcomes in order to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities, including PGY2 residencies and professional certifications.

The Fred Meyer residency program takes place in a corporate community/ambulatory care pharmacy setting. In addition, residents will participate in a series of interdisciplinary experiences at The Vancouver Clinic as well as Washington State University. There is an emphasis on the development, marketing, implementation, and delivery of patient care services in the evolving realm of community practice. Our program has a high level of progressive patient care services in a chain community pharmacy with an emphasis on management, business and leadership components.

Practice Site Descriptions

Overview
The residents will primarily work from the Fred Meyer Healthy Options® Patient Care Centers located in Portland, Ore. and Vancouver, Wash. The primary sites for the residents include the Grand Central and Orchards Fred Meyer Pharmacy locations and the Fred Meyer Division and District Offices. Although the residency is based out of the locations listed above, the resident will spend time at other Fred Meyer Pharmacy locations, the Washington State University College of Pharmacy campus in Spokane, Wash., and The Vancouver Clinic in Vancouver, Wash.

Fred Meyer is part of the Kroger family of grocery stores; a family-friendly, one-stop shopping store with 132 locations in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska. Current programs offered at Fred Meyer Pharmacy locations include immunizations, health and wellness screenings, medication therapy management, medication synchronization, minor ailment and emergency medication refill collaborative drug therapy agreements (CDTAs), transitions of care, hormonal contraceptive, naloxone and epinephrine prescribing, travel consultations, and health and wellness coaching programs.

The Washington State University Doctor of Pharmacy program has prepared aspiring pharmacists for over 125 years to excel and become leaders in their field. The four-year professional curriculum combines a competency-based testing model with a cutting edge active learning classroom, including instruction in the professional and legal responsibilities that come with working in healthcare. In addition, students learn within a warm, collegial atmosphere where innovation and new thinking are encouraged, and opportunities for research and patient care abound.

The Vancouver Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic committed to providing high-quality, cost-effective medical care for patients and families in southwest Washington. As a physician-owned and governed group, they are dedicated to building a stimulating practice setting based upon teamwork and mutual respect with the organization. Amongst other services, The Vancouver clinic also provides the Transitions of Care Clinic to serve patients who are at the highest risk of readmission, including those suffering from serious illness, frailty and social isolation. Patients are discharged by the hospital, or referred to the clinic by a group of physicians, to receive coordinated care provided by a team of healthcare specialists including pharmacists and pharmacy residents. Residents will also focus on chronic disease management and be a resource to other healthcare professionals as a drug information expert while working at The Vancouver Clinic.
