Addictions Treatment

The addiction treatment programs offered at Arbour Health System organizations provide safe, therapeutic environments to facilitate positive growth and change in the lives of clients. Addictions treatment services are offered at many outpatient locations and there is a continuum of care should more support be needed including Structured Outpatient Addictions Programs (SOAP) and inpatient detoxification. All sites offer programs for patients who have a dual diagnosis (a primary psychiatric disorder with co-occurring addictions) including community-based, outpatient, intensive inpatient programs, partial hospitalization programs (PHP), and inpatient treatment.

Outpatient additions services are available at Arbour Counseling Services (ACS) sites in Allston, Fall River, Franklin, Haverhill, Jamaica Plain, Lowell, Norwell, Woburn and Worcester.  This includes individual counseling, family therapy, medication management (see Suboxone Maintenance) and group programs. For more information on current group programs, please see Outpatient Groups.

Structured Outpatient Addictions Programs

Some sites also offer Structured Outpatient Addictions Programs (SOAP). Depending upon insurance coverage, this may also be called a Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program. These adult programs give participants a heightened level of self-awareness about their addiction and provide solid relapse prevention tools including coping skills. The patient-centered programs allow participants to live at home and meet work and other commitments while received treatment towards recovery.

SOAP and SA IOP are available at ACS sites in Jamaica PlainNorwell and Woburn.

Program services include evaluation and assessment, treatment and recovery planning, individual and group counseling, aftercare and discharge planning, and family therapy when necessary. Staff includes a physician specializing in addictions who is available to patients as needed.

Inpatient Services

While all of AHS hospital inpatient units have the ability to care for patients with primary psychiatric and co-occurring addictions disorders (dual diagnosis), Arbour-HRI Hospital have specialty units to for those who have primary addictions disorders and need detoxification as part of their acute admission. These units are licensed by both the Department of Mental Health and the Department of Public Health Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS). Inpatient treatment protocols include the use of Subutex, a medication that works to reduce the effects of opioid dependence and prevents withdrawal symptoms for those detoxifying from opioid addictions.

All of the hospital inpatient, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient programs offer services to patients with primary psychiatric and co-occurring addictions disorders. The AHS dual diagnosis continuum includes inpatient treatment, partial hospitalization/intensive outpatient programs, outpatient services, community-based care and community linkages including sober housing.
