The occupational therapy program at NYIT offers students an opportunity to earn a master's degree in occupational therapy. There is also a combined B.S./M.S. program for students who do not have a bachelor's degree that meets the admission requirements of the master's program. Chairperson's Welcome

The Department of Occupational Therapy, which began offering bachelor's degrees in 1996, has been fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) since 1999.   www.acoteonline.org 

The department offers two degree tracks, a combined Bachelor of Science in life science/Master of Science in occupational therapy for undergraduate students, and the Master of Science in occupational therapy for graduate students. These programs were fully accredited following the site visit by the ACOTE survey team in 2011.

The pre-professional courses are offered at NYIT's Old Westbury and Manhattan campuses; all of the professional (graduate level) courses are offered on the Old Westbury campus. The department has a teaching lab well-equipped to prepare students for the fieldwork experiences offered at a wide variety of vetted facilities throughout the greater New York metropolitan area and at selected sites throughout the United States.

The faculty are master clinicians with post-professional graduate preparation, as well as clinical and didactic teaching experience. The rigor of classroom and fieldwork instruction demands a high level of commitment from students. For example, students must complete eight months of full-time fieldwork in a variety of settings with persons of diverse cultural backgrounds with clinical and social problems.

In addition, the location of the program in a medical school complex offers rich laboratory and library resources, as well as education with other health professions students in nutrition, nursing, physical therapy, and physician assistant studies. The occupational therapy and physical therapy students learn together in nine of the required courses.
