Our Story

In 1955, a veterinarian by the name of Warren J. Wegert had a vision to make high-quality medicine available to pet owners living in Portland, Oregon. Since then, Banfield Pet Hospital has lived that vision and promoted the philosophy that the best relationships are formed when people work together. Our commitment to partnerships led PetSmart^®, the nation’s largest retailer of pet related products and services, to ask Banfield to help bring high-quality veterinary care to their customers by opening pet hospitals inside their stores beginning in 1994.    

In 2007, Banfield joined the Mars, Incorporated^® family of businesses. Today, we are more than 900 hospitals strong in neighborhoods across the United States and Puerto Rico with the common goal of providing high-quality medicine for each pet we treat and working alongside our clients to ensure they have the knowledge they need to care for their pets at home. We are the largest employer of veterinarians in the United States with more than 2,900 veterinarians committed to giving pets the highest quality of veterinary care.

Banfield veterinarians and technicians are skilled at treating a variety of pet health concerns. Our hospital teams provide the best healthcare available—we offer dentistry, surgery, microchipping, parasite control, preventive care, education and much more.

We are the leader in innovative pet healthcare programs such as Optimum Wellness Plans^®, now in place for two decades with more than 2.3 million pets actively enrolled. Wellness plans help make caring for pets simple and affordable through every stage of a pet’s life. 

Convenience
We know pets often get sick or need medical attention on evenings and weekends. That’s why we’re open late, on Saturdays and Sundays, and before pet owners go to work. Many of our hospitals are open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

Our Software

Banfield hospitals use a proprietary medical software system called PetWare^® to ensure high-quality and consistent care. Our nationwide medical database of pet health records is linked, making it easy for doctors to find pet records when clients travel or even relocate. 

Research

Banfield has an internal research team, Banfield Applied Research & Knowledge (BARK) which captures the medical data of more than six millions pets seen annually at Banfield hospitals and conducts research and shares it findings with veterinarians and the public. The team’s work is featured in peer-reviewed and scientific publications, insight-based tools (maps, risk charts), the Banfield Journal, and the award-winning annual State of Pet Health Report.
