About

Greetings from the KGI School of Pharmacy!

As a member of the prestigious Claremont Colleges, Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) is dedicated to education and research, aimed at translating into practice, for the benefit of society, the power and potential of the life sciences. In true KGI tradition, the School of Pharmacy will prepare graduates who are leaders among healthcare professionals dedicated to the delivery of advanced personally-optimized patient care and the translation of applied and clinical science breakthroughs to enhance the quality of life.

Our Program

Along with a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree, KGI graduates will receive a Certificate in one of four areas including Medication Therapy Outcomes, Health Information Technology, Healthcare Operation Management, and Clinical Trials/Regulatory Affairs. These Certificate Programs are interwoven throughout the curriculum and highlighted by 12 credits of classroom electives and an Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) in the 3rd year along with 12 weeks of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) in the 4th year.

Our Curriculum

Each stage of the 4-year PharmD program will involve one or more of the following curricular core components:

Sequential Science Series (SSS) courses consist of classroom, online, and laboratory experiences in the administrative, biomedical, pharmaceutical, and clinical sciences in a progressive modular schedule. In this series, courses will be offered 1 at a time in a block or concentrated fashion. Once completed, the students will move to the next course in the sequence.

Clinical Skills Series (CSS) courses will focus on the development of patient interaction skills. The courses develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for good communication, motivational interviewing, patient counseling, health diversity and cultural appreciation, drug information analysis, and inter-professional education.

Professional Development Series (PDS) courses teach students how to be professionals, expose them to career options, and teach them job seeking skills. Students assess their own strengths, personalities, and learning styles, develop leadership skills, plan their career choices, maintain an electronic portfolio of their work and self-assessment, and participate in community service.

The Experiential Education Series (ESS) comprises over 30% of the total curriculum and includes over 2,100 hours of varied pharmacy and pharmacy-related experiences (40% more than the minimum required by pharmacy accreditation standards). An introductory 2-week rotation will expose students to opportunities for pharmacists in the biotechnology industry. IPPE rotations will be conducted in community, long term care, and health-system practice sites as well as in one area of the student’s choosing including opportunities in the biotechnology industry. APPE’s will include advanced community, advanced health-system, ambulatory, acute care, direct patient care, and two elective rotations.

The curriculum is distinguished from other programs in having enhanced focus on pharmacogenomics, biomarkers, diagnostics, informatics, pharmacoeconomics, health outcomes, and pharmacovigilance. Inter-professional education activities are conducted with University of California Riverside School of Medicine students throughout the curriculum.

Our Location

Located in beautiful Southern California, KGI is only 35 miles east of Los Angeles in the city of Claremont. With 140 acres of parks and tree-lined streets, Claremont provides a rich cultural and architectural heritage that much resembles a small-town. As a member of the academically acclaimed Claremont University Consortium, KGI students are able to share a wide range of central facilities and services with students from any of the other six campuses.
