About

The Michigan College of Optometry (MCO) at Ferris State University is at the leading edge of vision care technology and patient care delivery. Among the smallest of the nation’s optometry schools, Ferris offers (through its low student to doctor ratio) virtually personalized instruction by one of the country’s finest optometric faculties, as well as, the advantages of a large system of clinics throughout the United States and Canada that assures a thorough exposure to the widest possible range of patient-care experiences. Although the College is small, Ferris State University is large (over 12,000 students) and, therefore, offers all the educational, cultural and social advantages of a major institution of higher learning.

In January 2011, MCO opened its new 87,000 square-foot teaching facility which contains the 33,000 square-foot University Eye Center clinic. A key feature of the University Eye Center is the nationally award winning Interprofessional Wellness Clinic where optometry students work side-by-side with pharmacy and nursing students. University Eye Center services include primary care, contact lenses, pediatrics, binocular vision, vision therapy, geriatrics, sports vision, low vision rehabilitation, medical/surgical and electrodiagnostics. In addition to the University Eye Center, students provide vision services at 3 external indigent clinics near Ferris State University.

For students with three years of undergraduate education, MCO offers a Bachelor’s of Science in Vision Science after completion of the student’s first year in the doctor of optometry program. The fourth year program includes a variety of clinical experiences, including private practice and practice management instruction as well as web-based interactive grand rounds. MCO has a very active Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (SVOSH) program, giving many of our students the opportunity to provide eye care to third-world countries.

MCO utilizes a rolling admissions process. It is advantageous for applicants to complete their application as soon as possible. Students interested in MCO should visit our website at www.ferris.edu/mco to see why MCO stands out.
