Green Initiatives: Colorado College's (CC) first on-campus renewable electricity project was initiated in April of 2008 and completed only three weeks later, just before graduation day, May 19th. The 25-kilowatt array is the largest solar electric system in the Colorado Springs Utilities service area.
You can access the data from the new system, including energy production and CO2 reduction at our Sunny Portal site. For years, CC students have emphasized the importance of having an effective recycling program on campus. Recycling is essential for promoting sustainability, protecting natural resources, and managing waste. Colorado has one of the highest land disposal rates in the country. Not only does recycling cut back on the use of landfills, it saves on production energy and limits the amount of precious natural resources being used. Our community has an obligation to assist in environmental conservation in order to protect the environment for present and future generations.
In late 2008, the College switched to single stream recycling. All recyclables can go into the same container. With this new program, CC hopes to greatly increase its waste diversion rate. The College will also be participating in Recyclemania this year!
CC has a well-established and expanding composting program.
Proper disposal of electronics materials, or e-waste, is a pressing environmental, public health and human rights issue. Find out where CC's e-waste is headed.
