This is not the first time you've heard that employers are checking soc-nets for potential candidate's profiles, activity, andinformation but my guess is that you hadn't realized how often this has really happened! Almost half (45%) of employers have checked soc-nets in 2009 (a 48% increase from just last year!). With this type of growth rate, you can expect with in the next two years, almost all employers will be searching soc-nets for your info.

Where are they looking? Facebook is numero uno at almost 30% and next in line is LinkedIn at 21%. Personally, LinkedIn is no such surprise because it is essentially your online resume and professional profile. Your LinkedIn profile is the info you want them to find first when they browse the web.

Now the real dirt... What are they finding? Just over one-third of employers have found content that have caused them not to hire a candidate (www.careerbuilder.com).

The top examples for rejecting a candidate based on social network information:

53% of survey respondents rejected candidates because they posted provocative or inappropriate photographs or information.

44% passed on a candidate because they saw content related to the person drinking or using drugs.

35% rejected candidates because they bad-mouthed their previous employer, co-workers or clients.

29% disqualified a candidate because the person showed poor communication skills.

26% rejected a candidate because that candidate made discriminatory comments on a social networking site.

24% rejected a candidate because that person lied about his/her qualifications.

20% did not hire a candidate because social media revealed that person had shared confidential information from a previous employer.

But not all bad. The study from CareerBuilder also explains some of the highlights:

50% say a candidate’s profile provided a good feel for the candidate’s personality and fit.

39% say a profile supported candidate’s professional qualifications.

38% say it showed a candidate is creative.

35% say a candidate showed solid communication skills.

33% say it showed a candidate was well-rounded.

19% were impressed that others posted good references about a candidate.

15% say it showed that a candidate received awards and accolades.

Key take out- It's very important to watch what information you post on your soc-nets! Any negative light on your mood while you most might make a negative light on your "brand image" to a potential employer. Your profile can do some harm. But be yourself- it could get you hired! Don't forget to ask for recommendations on LinkedIn! Major plus!!

2. Networking with people in the “green” market is key!! Having a discussion with any one or all of the speakers that have attended the CareerEco meetings would be an excellent place to begin networking within the green space. Finding sustainable organizations such as consulting companies and taking a few minutes of someone’s time there is another way to meet people within the green space and learn. The green industry is huge, ranging from Zip Cars to Solar Panels…eco-friendly pest control to wind energy. There are certainly more people out there to network with and talk to than you can possibly get to! With that said, there are no excuses not to network within the green community.

Despite the economic crisis, the environmental movement is gaining
traction by the day, and the trickle of green jobseekers has turned to
a flood. It seems that the meltdown in traditional careers, coupled
with an increased desire for meaning in the workplace, has prompted
this awakening and the resulting exodus toward meaning and greening.

Over the past month or two, I’ve been helping Alliant International University
with its new beautifully-named(!) Bright Green MBA, assessing the
rationale for studying environmental business. Inevitably, I’ve been
thinking back to my own education. While studying business at
undergraduate and graduate level, many of my colleagues expressed a
desire to “change the world” and make a significant contribution.
Despite the intense business-focus of these courses, the environmental
and ethical business courses were still popular. Yet at the time (early
2000s), it failed to translate: Many joined traditional consultancies,
investment banks and private equity firms.

Now that salaries have decreased and new jobs seem almost
non-existent within those traditional careers, it’s inevitable that
people are once again looking for meaning in the environmental sector.
When you couple the increased salaries that can be earned in the green
space, you might even be excused for asking whether it is money, rather
than the sector, that is driving jobseeker decision-making — or perhaps
the symbiosis of the two that now proves most attractive. What remains
unchanged, however, is what companies want and need
— environmentally-minded businesspeople. Almost every client tells
Bright Green Talent that the most important combination is a deep
knowledge of the environment coupled with business savvy. If people can
display both and understand the drivers and interaction of each, they
are supremely valuable in a sector where credibility is key. At this
point, I’d argue that ensuring organizations attract the right people
will be the factor that has most impact on our ability to affect the
environmental crisis. Which is why the green MBA programs that many
universities offer are well worth considering, particularly at a time
when jobs are harder to find.

It’s not just Alliant’s MGSM that is offering a (bright) Green MBA program. Yale, Michigan, Presidio, and Bainbridge are familiar names, and the Aspen Institute ranks 100
programs according to their integration of sustainability issues. In
addition, some of the traditional MBAs are starting to move in this
direction: The wunderkind of them all, Harvard, recently saw a group of
MBA students voluntarily sign an oath
to be more ethical. So, if you’re desperate for a green job but don’t
know where to look, then it’s likely you don’t know enough about the
market — yet. It might be time to consider going back to school.

GE - Water and Energy Go Hand and Hand

This article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle is an interesting read because it emphasizes the fact that water and power generation are inextricably tied to one another. Although clean energy gets center stage in this environmental revolution since solving energy will unbind our economy from foreign countries which supply oil, the water issue should not be pushed aside as less essential to our environmental and economic health. Not only do we need water for energy generation, we need clean water...(read more)

Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment - Get new Training

This organization has a great list of potential training programs that you may want to consider if you want to dive deep into the environmental and sustainability field. http://www.iema.net/training - Here is an overview of the kinds of training you can pursue.
